Captivity
The inaugural exhibition of SYNTAX considers the conditions that confine and those that release: borders real and imagined, fear and anxiety, social convention, and the reach of the state over body and mind.
The works range from the ephemeral to the insistently physical, and from personal history to present crisis and speculative future. Artists from six countries took part. Sophia Sobers and Vargas-Suarez Universal made new site-specific installations for the exhibition, which also presented painting, video and digital work not previously exhibited.
